Bryson City, NC
Yet another fun weekend with the Fortins at Deep Creek Campground. We were on site 47 this year, the Fortins were on 49. Tent sites were limited this year as half were replaced with cabins. We are not sure what will be available next year. Joe and I kayaked the Upper Nantahala on Friday. The families grilled dinner in camp that night and relaxed. Saturday found us up bright and early and at the Tuckasegee Outfitters' shop at 10am where we met my friend Vince. I carried kayaks for Vince, Joe, Ben and myself to the top while the rest of the gang caught the shuttle with their duckies. The ducks were dropped off below the bridge this year. We met our friends Kurt and Sharon at the putin and booked it on down to Amy, Jackson, Disa and Libby. After a fun day of floating, jumping and swimming, we showered and headed to the NOC for an early dinner. From there we drove back to Bryson City and up the Road To Nowhere for a hike through the tunnel. We were up early again on Sunday to go tubing at 9am (the Fortins needed to leave by noon). We had a great float, the water actually felt good, even that early, and we had the creek to ourselves. It would later be jam packed with tubers as the temps reached the mid-90s. The only snag was that Jackson climbed to the top of the waterfall, then slipped as he made his way back across it. He was shooting off the lip of it when he managed to snag a crack in a rock. His feet and legs were already over the edge. Very scary. The Heaths spent an afternoon shopping in town before packing up for the trek home. And as per tradition, we stopped at Phil's BBQ in Black Mountain for dinner.
