The French Broad
Section 9 - Windy Flats to Hot Springs
May 16, 2014- 4200cfs
We wrapped up a trip down Big Laurel with the French down to the campground. I was in hand paddles and was ready to be at the end of the flats when I go there, even with all the flow. We all stared at Kayaker's Ledge for a bit, then Bill fired it up. That looked good, so Lucas ran it. I borrowed Lucas' paddle and hit it next, followed by Dan. Dale wisely pulled his SUP around while John and Joe ran the ledge. At Franks, Lucas, Dan and I followed Bill down the right side line. That was a first for me and the ledge at the bottom was pretty fun. Lucas really wanted to run the standard Frank Bells rapid though, so he pulled his creeker all the way up the tracks and hit it right down the middle. It was a fun little ending to our great day on Big Laurel. After picking up my truck, then giving Will a ride back to his car, I settled down in front of the fire with a Dieselpunk IPA and watched Nathan grill up some mean bbq chicken. It was great to hang out with the SRVCC gang as I don't get to do that very often these days. And that night I slept like a baby by the river.
